Skin on frame kayaks are one of the most ancient types of watercraft on earth. They’ve been used by indigenous people all over the world for millennia, and they still serve as a viable way to get around in places where more modern materials aren’t available. There’s no reason why you can’t try one out too!

What is a Skin on Frame Kayak?

Skin on frame kayaks are made from wood and animal skins or synthetic fabrics such as ballistic nylon. They’re lightweight, easy to transport, easy to repair and durable. Skin on frame kayaks are cheap to make because you can use salvaged materials or find them at a thrift store or garage sale.

The History of Skin on Frame Kayaks

Skin on frame kayaks are a very old form of kayak. They were originally made by the Inuit people of the Arctic, who used them for hunting and fishing. The Inuit would use animal skins to create a framework that could be covered with wood and other materials to make the boat watertight.

How a Skin on Frame Kayak is Made

Skin on Frame kayaks are made from a wooden frame that supports a stretched animal hide or fabric. The fabric is sewn to the wood frame, creating a waterproof seal between the two.

The fabric is attached to the top and bottom of this wooden boat structure, leaving openings for entry and exit at either end of your kayak as well as along its sides. Once you’re done building it, you can paddle around in comfort without worrying about getting wet!

Popularity of Skin on Frame Kayaks

Skin on frame kayaks are popular because they are easy to build.

They can be transported in the trunk of a car or strapped to the roof of your vehicle.

The materials used for these boats are durable and lightweight, so they’re ideal for camping trips and long journeys down rivers or lakes–or even just for taking out for a day on the water!

Lightweight 70 denier ripstop nylon fabric is ideal for manufacturing windbreakers, rain jackets, ponchos, flags, banners, liners, and light use equipment covers.
Manufacturers create urethane coated nylon – a stronger and more stable fabric compared to uncoated denier fabric.

Coated nylon fabrics are used in upholstery, luggage, bags and apparel. If used in apparel tiny holes are punched in the fabric to improve it’s breathability.

Black Ripstop Projects

Sewing projects utilizing ripstop are versatile. The material makes handling and sewing more complex than some other fabrics. But once you learn to use it, you can create some of these amazing, useful projects:

Backpacks: School bags and camping packs need the waterproof strength of ripstop. With the right shoulder straps and support, ripstop bags are capable of supporting a lot of weight. So, it is perfect for college and high school students.

Backpack Covers: Anyone who uses a backpack benefits from a backpack cover. For campers, it offers an extra layer of protection from rain and snow. For commuters, a backpack cover is capable of protecting laptops and papers from precipitation.

Jackets & Windbreakers: Ripstop is used often for outerwear. The fabric is light yet strong. Wind cannot even pass through it! Due to its light weight, ripstop can be easily folded into a bag or pocket.

Parachutes: Parachutes utilize ripstop nylon due to its lightweight, tight-woven attributes. Parachutes and kites alike are preferably made with ripstop.

Reusable Grocery Bags: This easy project conveniently gives you non-plastic options for your shopping. These bags fold up easily into pockets, purses and glove boxes for your convenience.

Sleeping Quilts: Extra quilts for camping are helpful in cold weather. These lightweight sleeping quilts are easy to carry and protect against water and wind.

Tarps & Rainflys: For tents and hammocks, rain-flys keep moisture out of sleeping areas. They are easy to create and use!

Tents & Shelters: Create tents and shelters for backyard fun or intense camping trips. Many projects of this nature are more complex and require advanced sewing skills.

Toiletry Bags: Toiletry bags need to be compact and easy to clean. Ripstop provides the perfect characteristics needed to create a useful toiletry bag.

Quick Tips for Working with Ripstop Nylon Fabric

Here are some quick tips for working with ripstop nylon. For an in-depth guide, check out our blog.

Use freshly sharpened scissors or a rotary fabric cutter to reduce fraying of the fabric.

Burn your edges or seams for a sturdy seal. Remember to exercise extreme caution when attempting this technique.

Practice your sewing stitches on ripstop! Use zigzag stitches can help keep your seams from breaking when the fabric stretches.

Want to keep your fabric from moving? Use double sided tape rather than straight pins to keep your fabric from moving around as you sew.

1000 Denier Nylon Fabric (Textured) | Tan | 60″ wide

1000 denier nylon fabric consists of high tenacity nylon yarn, plain woven fabric with a polyurethane coating, making it water repellent (durable). Denier nylon is not as expensive as the Cordura version, but it has very similar properties. We use Cordura to refer to any hook and loop such as Velcro. Cordura is required for military specified products. But for commercial uses, nylon canvas works just as well.

Perfect for the following projects:

Luggage

Sport bags

Duffel bags

Backpacks

Wallets

Horse blankets

Pet beds

Chaps

Much more!

Resistant to abrasion, high-strength, price and a variety of colors make denier nylon a popular choice for durable products. 1050D ballistic nylon is also available for purchase.
